Understanding Your Services

Plain-English explanations of common procedures and what to expect, so you can feel informed and confident before your appointment.

Pap Smear (Cervical Screening)

What it is

Screening for HPV and detection of abnormal cells. Further testing for abnormal cells where indicated.

How it works

A small sample of cells is collected from the cervix using a soft brush. It takes about 1–2 minutes.

Why it matters

Cervical cancer is largely preventable when caught early. Guidelines recommend screening every 3 years from age 21.

What to expect

Mild discomfort or pressure, rarely painful. Results typically within 2 weeks.

Colposcopy

Performed in-room, no hospital admission needed

What it is

A more detailed examination of the cervix, usually recommended after an abnormal pap smear.

How it works

At this practice, colposcopy is performed in the consulting rooms with no hospital admission required, making it more accessible and affordable. This allows areas of the cervix to be highlighted and a small sample to be taken for analysis.

What to expect

Similar to a smear test. Mild stinging if solution applied. Usually takes 15–20 minutes.

Laparoscopy

What it is

A minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat conditions inside the abdomen and pelvis, including endometriosis, ovarian cysts, fibroids, pelvic pain, and fertility issues.

How it works

Small incisions (5–10 mm) are made, a camera is inserted, and surgical instruments are guided visually. Performed under general anaesthetic.

What to expect

Usually day surgery or one overnight stay. Faster recovery than open surgery. Return to normal activity within 1–2 weeks for most patients.

High-Risk Pregnancy Management

What it means

Certain pregnancies require closer monitoring due to increased risk to mother or baby.

Conditions managed

Gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, hypertension, multiple pregnancies (twins/triplets), previous pregnancy complications, advanced maternal age, placenta praevia, and foetal growth restriction.

What Dr Baker does

More frequent antenatal visits, targeted ultrasound monitoring, specialist referrals when needed, and close collaboration with neonatology if required.

What to expect

More frequent visits and scans than a routine pregnancy, but the same warm, personalised care.

Fertility Work-Up

What it is

A systematic investigation to identify causes of difficulty conceiving.

What's involved for the female partner

Hormone blood tests (FSH, LH, AMH, thyroid), pelvic ultrasound (ovarian reserve, anatomy), and hysterosalpingography (HSG) to check fallopian tubes if indicated.

What's involved for the male partner

Semen analysis.

Next steps

Depending on findings, management may include lifestyle advice, ovulation induction, referral for IVF/IUI, or further investigation.

What to expect

A thorough, compassionate process. Most answers come within 2–4 weeks of initial investigations.
